Echocrome: First Impressions

March 06th, 2008 | Category: Games

The Echocrome demo has just been released on the Japanese PSN. Luckily its a small download and as result of that, a very quick play through as well. For better or worse, I’ve had a chance to play through it and gather some “first impressions.”

King of Fighter XII shows Street Fighter how it should be done

March 03rd, 2008 | Category: Games

Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft is reporting that the next King of Fighters game is 100% hand drawn. SNK made basic 3D models of the characters, animated them, and took them back to 2D for fleshing out, by hand, on a tablet PC - I’d argue this makes them more like “100% tablet traced” than “100% hand drawn” but that’s beside the point. This is by far the best looking 2D fighter seen thus far. Could this give KoFXII the boost it needs to dethrone the current king of 2D fighters, Street Fighter?

NHL 08: Multipurpose Hockey Trainer

February 26th, 2008 | Category: Games

I have been a diehard fan of the EA NHL series since 94. Every year there was some change, some years it just seemed like a roster update, but a guaranteed change for sure was how to score goals. Last season’s way of scoring…was not this season’s way of scoring.

In 99 it WAS IMPOSSIBLE to score from a shot from the point, the only way of scoring was to Read more

Sega to bring Japanese cel-shaded JPG to western photo-realistic countries

February 25th, 2008 | Category: Games

Valkyrie of the Battlefield, also known as “Gallian Chronicles”, and now known as “Valkyria Chronicles” (all terrible names, imo), has finally been announced as a release in more than just Japan. I’m completely in love with the look of this game, I’m a sucker for farm girl snipers, and I’m definitely into WWI-esque setting. Hopefully, the gameplay and narrative hold up.

New PixelJunk game! Eden

February 20th, 2008 | Category: Games

With my new found addiction to PixelJunk Monsters, I’ve started to take notice whenever Q-Games releases something new for the PSN. Now they’ve announced a new pollen gathering game that looks innovative and fun. I don’t know what happened to PJ Racers, but the studio looks to be right on track. Time to keep an eye on them (as they do on us).

Warhawk patch 1.3 coming, maybe I’ll actually play again…

February 16th, 2008 | Category: Games

Warhawk version 1.3 is on its way. I haven’t played Warhawk..well at all really since buying the game. I found it too confusing, the ground troop controls frustrating, the voice chat annoying and finding friends a chore. Version 1.3 seems to address quite a few of these concerns (apparently I wasn’t the only one). Maybe I’ll give it another try..although it’ll be hard to play Warhawk when I could be playing Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. For the low down on what Patch 1.3 brings click HERE

PixelJunk Monsters Update (and some strategy)

February 08th, 2008 | Category: Games

I was a bit quick to judge PixelJunk Monster. Apparently “tower defense” games are an entire genre like “fps” or “rpg” (td?). So apologies for lumping it in with desktop tower defense. I finally purchased Monsters in full at the urging of a friend…and with a bit of reluctance loaded it up and played through the tutorial and easy levels once more…

Conflict: Denied OPS first impressions

February 06th, 2008 | Category: Games

Last week a demo with no real buzz or info hit the PSN, its name “Conflict: Denied OPS” which is confusing in itself doesn’t really say much either. So is this a hidden gem or forgettable fodder? Well, unfortunately its singleplayer experience is more the latter, however it does feature a coop mode which does deserve some attention.

Final Uncharted trailer

February 06th, 2008 | Category: Games

This was recently posted to the “official” playstation blog, a “final” Uncharted trailer. Why they are still making and releasing trailers for this game I’m not sure, but meh, whatever, let’s roll with it. Uncharted is my game of 2007, I thought it was awesome. This trailer however is not and all the commenter’s on the playstation blog who think the trailer is “Best.Trailer ever” I don’t quite understand. It has some neat effects but on the whole its a slideshow, a series of screenshots set to music. This is a game that looks amazing in motion, has great voice acting, and cool cut scenes, all of which this trailer shows nothing. I don’t get it…

PS3 Greatest/Platinum/Best Hits

February 05th, 2008 | Category: Games

PS3 - the Best - Game Line-up

SCE Japan announced the release of Japan’s greatest hits-esque line (”the Best”). Hopefully the other territories will hear announcements soon as well. Hopefully they’ll retain their respective discount-line names and not the terminally horrible “Best” moniker. Hopefully they won’t use the “squished-box-art-and-yellow” motif (is a blue bar and full art unreasonable? I’d photoshop something up, but… I didn’t).
